Kids, the needy to benefit from higher medical funding

People register for treatment at the Central Paediatric Hospital.

The Ministry of Finance proposed the Government increase the State budget for free health check-ups, treatment for children under six, and healthcare assistance for the needy.

Next year’s State medical allocation is expected to increase by 20 per cent, to VND90,000 for each child and VND60,000 for each poor person per annum, up from VND75,000 and 50,000 respectively.

The Ministry said the increase was needed to ensure the fund had adequate financing and budget balancing capacity in 2006. It estimated a total of VND940 billion (US$59.4 million) would be required for free medical check-ups and treatment for children under six next year, and a further VND1.3 trillion ($82.3 million) for treating the poor.

The calculation was based on a projected increase in child population, and higher numbers of people classified as poor as a result of the new national poverty standard.
