More than 22 million schoolchildren and students celebrated the start of a new academic year in ceremonies nationwide on Sunday.
Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai attended ceremonies at several schools in Quang Nam, Quang Ninh and Nam Ha provinces.
Party General Secretary Manh, accompanied by Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Minh Hien, joined teachers and students of the Kim Dong Junior Secondary School in Hoi An township, central Quang Nam province.
The Party leader wishes teachers and students nationwide many progresses and achievements in the new academic year.
He reiterated that education is at the root of national construction and defence, and the first priority in national policy. Manh called on teachers to constantly improve their ethics and teaching skills; and students concentrate on their studies to increase their contribution to the national development.
National Assembly Chairman An attended the inaugural ceremonies at the Hon Gai Junior Secondary School and the Boarding School for Ethnic Students in northeastern Quang Ninh province.
Chairman An praised the achievements of the education sector of Quang Ninh province, and the contribution made by teachers in remote, mountainous, border areas and on the islands.
Chairman An asked Quang Ninh province to pay more attention to improving the quality of the teaching staff.
At the Boarding School for Ethnic Students, Chairman An urged the ethnic students to overcome difficulties, strive their best to contribute to the development of their ethnic groups and national construction.
Prime Minister Khai shared the joy of nearly 1,000 officials, teachers and students of the Bac Ly Junior Secondary School in Ly Nhan district, Nam Ha province in the inauguration of the 2004-05 schoolyear.
Bac ly school, established in 1953, was the pace setter of the educational sector for many years. The school has been awarded the Labour Hero title two times, and the Independence Order, second class, in 2003.
PM Khai urged Bac Ly and other schools nationwide to build on their achievement and overcome shortcomings to make create a breakthrough in educational quality in the 2004-05 school year.
