Mass organisations called on to fight dengue fever

The Ministry of Public Heath has called upon localities and mass organisations to coordinate actions in preventing dengue fever from spreading.

The ministry urged students, members of the Communist Youth Union and other mass organisations to join in a campaign to kill mosquitoes and larvae in their communities.

Epidemiologists said the summer temperatures and the storing of water in containers for daily use due to prolonged drought in the Mekong delta provinces are creating conditions for mosquitoes to proliferate. The campaign should be intensified to prevent the spread of the disease.

According to the ministry, the number of dengue fever patients and deaths this year dropped 53 percent and 69 percent, respectively, as compared to 1998, when a big epidemic occurred.
