The strategic development of training, education, science and technology will help Vietnam advance steadily, rapidly and sustainably, said Prime Minister Phan Van Khai in the city yesterday.
Addressing teachers and students of HCM City National University, Khai lauded the university's efforts to overcome difficulties and challenges to improve the quality of teaching and learning to meet international standards.
"Human resource is the most important factor in the nation's development," Khai said, adding that "it was necessary to stage a revolution to improve the tertiary education sector for creating highly professional scientists with firm political beliefs."
PM Khai asked the university board of management to pay special attention to foster a strong and efficient teaching staff to improve the quality of teaching, research and development and combine theory and practice.
He hoped the national university would become a role model for the country's tertiary education system.
At present, the university has 2020 faculty members - double the figure of 2001. Of this, 1,265 members had post graduate degrees. In 2005, nearly 200 students and teachers from the university were admitted to the Vietnam Communist Party, with students accounting for 70.
Khai praised the university's, decision to work closely with authorities of HCM City and Binh Duong Province to clear 643.7ha for a new site for the university and campus.
PM Khai was accompanied by Deputy PM Pham Gia Khiem, Secretary of the City Party Committee Nguyen Minh Triet and Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan and other senior officials.
