Khmer people in Hung Hoi invest in education

Remote Hung Hoi commune in Vinh Loi district, southern Bac Lieu province with 75% of the population belonging to Khmer ethnic minority group has surprised many people of its traditional eagerness of learning. Currently, Hung Hoi has over 100 students studying in universities and colleges inside and outside the province.

The Ministry of Education and Training announced new investment in semi-boarding and boarding schools for children from ethnic minorities while almost 22 million students are expected to attend the inauguration day of the 2004-2005 school year on Sunday.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) faces a shortage of qualified teachers and education managers. "Despite great efforts and recent achievements, the country’s educational system will face some serious difficulties," said Deputy Education Minister Nguyen Van Vong.
