Made-in-Viet Nam products now dominate the country's supermarkets and trade centres, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, reported an international seminar on policy to promote modern distribution models held in Ha Noi on Tuesday.
Nguyen Van Sang, Deputy Director of the Domestic Market Policy Department of the Trade Ministry, said the retail market in Viet Nam has formed a close relationship between producers, importers and distributors. Supermarkets become an important channel for Vietnamese producers to advertise their trademarks.
Domestic goods have gradually replaced imported goods, from 30-50 percent in 1997-1998 to over 70 percent at present. Eighty-five to 90 percent of goods such as food, cosmetics and garments are produced by Vietnamese businesses.
Ten years after the first supermarket opened in Viet Nam, the country now has 170 supermarkets and trade centres in 25 provinces and cities, and about 600 small-scale shops offering self-service. HCM City leads with 60 supermarkets, many being large-scale.
Each supermarket has domestic goods supplied by 2,000-3,000 local producers.
