Eight key export items in 2006-2010

Wood products for export

In building the national export strategy for the 2006-2010 period, the Ministry of Trade has listed eight key export items, which will be given priority to develop strongly. They are wood products, electrical and electronic equipment, plastics, handicrafts, fruits and vegetables, cashew nuts, shipbuilding, and agricultural machines.

According to an official from the Ministry of Trade, all sectors involved in producing eight key export items are required to expand their export value to more than US$1 billion in less than five years, develop harmoniously with the ecological environment, generate new jobs and help to eliminate poverty and bridge development gap between regions. In addition, they should be of high competitiveness and great potential to develop on a large scale in the future.

The Ministry of Trade says in the 2001-2005 period, most export productive sectors fared well and the light industrial and handicraft sectors gained the highest growths, accounting for 41 percent of the country’s total export value.

Many foreign experts highlight Vietnam for having initially succeed in improving the export structure as it focuses on increasing the volume of processed products and reducing that of crude products in order to create stable markets for certain products.

In 2005, crude oil and garment export value is expected to reach more than US$5 billion. In addition, five other products with export value of more than US$1 billion are seafood, footwear, electronics, computer spare parts, wood and rice. Vietnam is still the world’s largest exporter of pepper, second largest exporter of rice and coffee, and third largest exporter of cashew nuts.
