Ha Noi showcases Cham art, culture

Artists perform the Po Kai Dance of the Cham ethnic-minority people in Phu Yen Province

A cultural festival to celebrate the Cham ethnic minority of the central and southern regions will open in Ha Noi next month. Artisans and performers from nine central and southern provinces are expected to participate.

The Viet Nam Centre for Culture and Art will host the event from August 25 to 31. Organisers have planned the event to coincide with both the National Day celebrations on September 2 and the 50th anniversary of the capital’s liberation on October 10.

Events will include an exhibition on the distinct Cham culture of the southern central region. Each province and city will also have its own showroom.

Festival – goers will have the opportunity to admire and understand the Cham cultural heritage, including Cham towers, stone statues, apartments and handicraft products. Cham musicians will also perform traditional songs and dances in traditional Cham clothing.

The event will also showcase traditional folklore and rituals for good health, rain and weddings. Cham artists will also perform educational demonstrations on brocade cloth weaving, ceramics kneading and knitting.

After the successful Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands), Khmer and Tay Bac (Northwestern) festivals, organisers expect a good turn-out for the Cham ethnic minority cultural festival. —VNS
