Vinh Linh celebrates 50th Traditional Day and glorious history

The 50th anniversary of Vinh Linh Traditional Day (August 25, 1954 - August 25,2004) was solemnly held in Ho Xa town, Vinh Linh district, central Quang Tri province on Wednesday. Nguyen Khoa Diem, Secretary of Vietnam?s Central Party Committee attended the ceremony.

Vinh Linh lies in the north of Quang Tri province. Covering an area of 800 square metres, Vinh Linh was liberated on August 25, 1954. Together with the Ben Hai River along the 17th parallel, Vinh Linh became the temporally demarcation between the north and the south during US war of aggression against Vietnam.

As a special zone, Vinh Linh actively co-operated with local army forces to fight the enemies. The site was considered as ?the heroic steel fortress? and received eight complimentary letters from President Ho Chi Minh.

After half a century of reconstruction and fighting against enemies, Vinh Linh has made great strides in socio-economic development with an annual growth rate of 9 percent. Vinh Linh?s agriculture accounts for 50 percent of the province?s economic structure while industry and trade covers 22 percent and 28 percent, respectively.

The Vinh Linh local people have planted 4,500 hectares of rubber, 700 hectares of peppers and 11,000 hectares of paper material.

Two banks of the Ben Hai River, which used to be occupied by craters, have now become shrimp raising ponds with an annual production capacity of 3,000 tonnes.

Vinh Linh already eradicated hunger in 1990 and poor households only make up 10 percent of the community. The network of electricity, roads, schools and village hospitals covers 22 communes and towns. The district has achieved secondary educational universalisation while 18,000 out of 20,300 households have received cultural family certificates.

Speaking at the ceremonies, Nguyen Khoa Diem, member of the Politburo and Secretary of the Party Central Committee praised the achievements and great contributions of Vinh Linh?s people during the past 50 years. He urged Vinh Linh to continue to develop its glorious tradition as a heroic region.

?The Party and Government urge related departments and organisations to devise specific policies for Vinh Linh to overcome difficulties to develop Vinh Linh into a more beautiful and wealthy region,? he said.

Mr Diem said Vinh Linh has a number of advantages and strengths entering the process of national industrialisation and modernisation, such as forests, sea, islands and rich natural minerals, as well as historic sites and beautiful spots to develop tourism. In particular, he mentioned that the people of Vinh Linh-Quang Tri are patriotic, hard working and creative, which adds to their economic potential.

On behalf of the Quang Tri people, Vu Trong Kim, Party member and Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee, expressed his admiration for Vinh Linh?s Party and people during the past 50 years. He highlighted the undauntable spirit of the Vinh Linh people in the struggle against American aggression and discussed their determination to develop Vinh Linh in the process of the national construction.

Participants at the ceremonies showed their great gratitude to heroes and fallen combatants who sacrificed themselves for national independence, as well as to the glorious achievements of soldiers and people in Vinh Linh in the process of national construction during the past 50 years.

Earlier on Tuesday, an art performance to mark the 50th anniversary of Vinh Linh Traditional Day was held in Ho Xa town, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province.
